The Problem with Archives: The Runaways
The Freedom on the Move database houses over 30,000 runaway slave newspaper notices from various Universities in the South. These portraits are created using the limited descriptions listed in selected newspaper notices. Specific features, like scaring or physical descriptors, are painted as realistically as possible while the rest of the face is designed using the word provided by enslavers in the newspaper ads.
