Lillian Young is a Black artist and educator.
“My art focuses on highlighting people, moments, and objects centered around the Black Experience that is left out of the mainstream narrative. I want my art to be a starting point for people to have those uncomfortable conversations about issues that are considered taboo to discuss. As our country changes it is important for us to remember our history to learn from our mistakes.”
Historical artist Lillian Young describes herself as a painter who moonlights as a printmaker and her works depict forgotten or muted moments in Black history and the Black experience. She focuses on lesser-known black figures, stories, and objects that are commonly known by the black communities, and wants her art to start a dialogue between people about the current racial issues faced today.
Lillian's works are based on historical documents and photos from various archives. Her incorporation of text plays a large part in her practice, solidifying the actuality of the events she depicts.
