In 1848, husband and wife, Ellen and William Craft, boarded a train in Georgia and escaped to freedom. The two slaves disguised themselves, Ellen as an injured white man and William as her slave. This piece shows the crafts in their disguises (the only known photos of them). Between the Crafts are two night images that represent the Underground Rail Road, that an estimated 100,000 slaves used to escape to freedom.
